This occurred during several ethno-religious conflicts that Indonesia suffered during the late 1990s and early 2000s. After the Christian side had problems with the Muslim side and ended up massacring the Muslim population of several territories, Muslims and Christians from other nearby territories came on the scene to settle scores with each other. From there it escalated into a full-scale religious war where Indonesian Christians (who had a centuries-old tradition of hunting enemy heads) killed and beheaded Indonesian Muslims; including even children and babies.
The Muslim inhabitants also claimed that the Christians ate the flesh and drank the blood of the people they killed, a thing they did not only with the adults but also with the children.

It is worth noting that the conflict was, in terms of fighting methods, a medieval war because most of the attackers used bows, machetes, Molotov cocktails, spears, knives, sickles and melee weapons in general. Only a few carry firearms.
